🍂 September Musings: Why This Month Always Feels Like a Reset

I don’t know about you, but September always feels like the true start of a new year for me. January never has quite the same pull! It’s dark and cold, and I’m usually still in a bit of a Christmas fog. September though… that’s when the energy really shifts.
The holidays are over, the kids and grandkids are back at school, and suddenly there’s a rhythm to the days again. I usually take a little time away in August, and it always does me the world of good. The break gives me space to think about me for a change, to rest, and to come back with fresh eyes. I notice it most once I get home - I feel lighter somehow, clearer in my head, and ready to make a few gentle changes. I usually set some goals for between the beginning of September and Christmas, and I find I'm so much more motivated at this time of year.
There’s something about the air in September too. That crisp edge in the mornings, the leaves starting to turn, the evenings drawing in. I find myself wanting to nest a little more, to get the house cosy, and to finally tackle those jobs I’ve been putting off before Christmas creeps up. It’s like a natural pause between the busyness of summer and the full swing of autumn.
This year, I’ve eased myself back into a weekday routine that feels right for me. Bed early with a "sleepy tea" and a good book, no screens after 9pm, and then up early to get some "behind the scenes" work done while the house is still quiet. I’ve found I do my best creative work and get far more done in those peaceful early hours before the day gets busy.
I’m also working my way around the house, decluttering and freshening up the paint here and there. Nothing too pressurised - just bits as and when I can, so it feels manageable instead of overwhelming. And one of the biggest changes I’ve decided to make is giving myself alternate Mondays and Fridays off. My work/life balance can be a bit chaotic at times, and when I run a business that helps others and talks about the importance of self care, I have to remember it all has to start with me!
For me, a reset doesn’t mean big resolutions or strict rules. It’s the small choices that make life flow better. Saying no when I need a quiet night in. Leaving gaps in the diary so I’m not rushing everywhere. Giving myself permission to rest as much as I encourage others to.
So while the world might see January as the time for fresh starts, I’ve always found that September holds that energy more naturally. A chance to shed what we don’t need anymore, like the trees dropping their leaves, and to step into autumn feeling grounded, refreshed, and ready for what’s next.
I’d love to know - do you feel that same September reset energy too? 🍂
