Why Rest is Actually More Productive – And How to Let Yourself Slow Down

We’re all so used to pushing ourselves, aren’t we? Always trying to stay busy, ticking off endless tasks, and striving to be as productive as possible. But did you know that rest is actually one of the most productive things you can do for yourself? In today’s world, it’s far too easy to feel like slowing down is a luxury we just don’t have time for. But the truth is, rest is vital - not only for our wellbeing, but also for our mental clarity and productivity.
I know it can be hard to let yourself slow down when there's always something that needs doing, but hear me out: by allowing ourselves the time to rest, we can actually get more done, feel more focused, and show up as our best selves.
Here’s the thing: rest isn’t about doing nothing - it’s about giving your mind and body the chance to reset. When we don’t rest, we end up running on empty, which leaves us feeling drained, unfocused, and burnt out.
But when we take the time to properly recharge, we come back feeling clearer, more creative, and ready to take on whatever comes our way. Rest helps us to recharge those batteries and brings everything back into focus.
I totally get it - it might sound a little counterintuitive at first. But taking regular breaks and making time for proper rest has been shown to actually boost productivity. Setting a timer for a set period of uninterrupted focus on whatever you’re doing, then walking away and taking a break works wonders! Studies have found that taking breaks helps you refocus, reduces stress, and improves your ability to make decisions. Rest isn’t just for sleep - it’s for helping you function at your very best.
I think we’ve all felt guilty about taking a break at some point, especially when there's so much to be done. But… rest is not a luxury, it's essential.
Here are a few ways you can start incorporating rest into your routine without feeling guilty:
Schedule It In
It sounds a bit strange, but planning rest is actually one of the best ways to make sure it happens. Whether it’s 10 minutes to sit quietly with a cuppa, a quick walk around the block, or a proper hour of downtime, put it in the diary. Prioritise it just like any other important task.
Start Small
Don’t feel like you need to take a whole afternoon off (although if you can, do it!). Start small with quick, intentional breaks - close your eyes for a minute, take a few deep breaths, or stretch your arms and legs. These little moments all add up and help to reset your mind.
Unplug the Gadgets
We’re all glued to our screens, and while they help us stay connected, they can also leave us feeling completely drained. Try stepping away from your phone or computer for just a little while each day…. Put it where you can’t see it! Whether it’s a few minutes in the morning or evening, give yourself a break from all the digital chatter.
Do What You Love
Rest doesn’t have to mean doing nothing. Find something that relaxes you - whether that’s reading a book, journaling, drawing, or just enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of tea. The goal is to switch off from everything else and just focus on something that brings you peace.
So, there you have it - rest isn’t just something we should do when we’re tired. It’s a vital part of being able to function at our best, and it’s something we should embrace, not feel guilty about. By giving yourself permission to rest, you’re allowing yourself the time to recharge, refocus, and come back much stronger.
And remember, rest isn't lazy, it's productive!
So take care of yourself and take that well-earned break. You deserve it! 💗
